Hours: Temporary: 37.5 hours per week, plus minimum every 4th week rotating schedule of after-hours on-call, including weekends and holidays

Salary: $18.00-$20.00 per hour, dependent upon qualifications

There is one temporary position open at this time for a six-month assignment.

Responsibilities include:
•    Provides care for dogs, cats, rabbits and other domestic animals in the shelter
•    Prepares and administers diets and medications
•    Monitors for disease and treats basic animal illnesses at the direction of the Veterinarian
•    Injects microchips and administers vaccinations at the direction of the Veterinarian
•    Assists in restraining animals
•    Conducts behavior assessments
•    Observes and reports animals for abnormalities, behavior concerns and illness
•    Cleans and sanitizes equipment, kennels, cages, food dishes, litter pans, and other items
•    Sorts donations, maintains storage areas and inventory
•    Counsels pet owners and the general public on animal adoption, surrender and reclaim
•    Prepares/maintains records and reports on animals, field calls, animal bites, etc.
•    Investigates and responds to stray, unwanted, neglected, sick and injured animals as required for rabies control and humane treatment
•    Investigates animal law violations, public safety concerns, alleged nuisances and humane complaints
•    Performs routine animal apprehension, rescue and control work
•    May assist Veterinarian with surgery, sterilizing instruments and/or preparing surgical kits
•    Applies basic first aid to injured animals
•    Performs emergency euthanasia for suffering animals (primarily wildlife)
•    Performs follow-up work on bite reports, complaints and ordinance compliance
•    Contacts bite victims and owners and coordinates rabies observation efforts with appropriate authorities
•    Counsels and educates citizens on DCACC policy and services, responsible pet ownership, dangerous dogs, basic humane care, etc.
•    Serves as a resource for citizens, veterinary community, and local authorities for questions pertaining to the Animal Control Act, Humane Care Act, and responsible pet ownership
•    Issues citations for Animal Control Act, Humane Care Acts & County ordinance violations
•    Testifies in court if needed
•    Collects, prepares, documents and delivers specimens for rabies testing
•    Provides backup customer service support for clients in-person or over the phone with answering questions, issuing rabies tags, collecting payment for services, animal relinquishment, adoption and/or reclaim

Physical requirements and work environment:
•    While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally be required to run, reach with hands and arms, operate physical restraint equipment, and lift up to 50 lbs.  
•    While performing the duties and responsibilities the employee will be exposed to animal bites and/or scratches, loud noises, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, exposure to human and animal remains in varying states of decomposition, varying weather conditions and situations.

Requirements include the following experience or equivalent combination of training and experience:
•    Completion of a High School Diploma or general Equivalency Diploma equivalent
•    One (1) year of animal science or related course work
•    Two (2) years of experience as an officer or caretaker in an animal control or animal shelter
•    Valid Illinois Driver’s License

The preferred candidate will have experience as a Community Service Officer, Enforcement Officer, Animal Caretaker or Veterinary Technician
