Stray Animal Information

  • Stray animals are held for seven days to give owners a chance to find them.
  • If an animal has identification, the owner is immediately notified.
  • If not reclaimed after seven days, the animal will either be euthanized or kept until adopted.
    • Animals up for adoption are cared for at the shelter until a responsible home can be found.
    • While there is no specific limit on the amount of time an animal is available for adoption, it is not unlimited. Euthanasia may be in the best interest of some animals after an extended stay at the shelter.
    • On average, it takes two weeks to find an adoptable pet a responsible home.
  • Over 75% of stray dogs and 99% of stray cats sheltered at DCAC have no identification, decreasing the animals' chances of being reunited with owners.
    For your pet's sake, make sure it wears an ID tag at all times.
  • Microchipping is a great way to permanently, positively identify your pet, should your pet ever become lost or stolen.
