We’re looking for interested volunteers to help with animal care (walking dogs, socializing and playing with cats); pet therapy (taking adoption dogs and cats to the Convalescent Center); kennel assistance (helping to care for the adoption cats); and adoption and public events (helping with off site events at locations such as PetsMart).

The DuPage Convalescent Center provides services to persons needing 24 hour skilled nursing care and short term subacute care. We provide a multitude of volunteer opportunities for individuals wiling to share their time, talent and energy in a friendly and warm environment.  

Volunteers play an essential role on our care team, which focuses on improving the quality of life for our residents.   Volunteers provide an array of services including delivering the mail, transporting residents to therapy programs, participating in activities to leading religious programs, friendship visiting, sharing their musical talents with the residents'   and much, much more.   We welcome individuals, families and groups to join the Volunteer team at the Center.  Opportunities are available morning, afternoon and evening seven days a week.

The Money Management Program needs volunteers to assist eligible seniors throughout DuPage County in a variety of areas: Bill Payers sort mail, balance checkbooks and help access outside resources; Representative Payees work with the Money Management Coordinator; Monitors visit clients every three months to ensure the programs integrity and check accounts; and Office Volunteers assist the coordinator with mailings, filings and phone calls.  The program is co-sponsored by AARP and the Illinois Department on Aging.  Volunteers are trained, supervised and monitored by a Money Management Coordinator and insured by AARP.

DuPage County Senior Citizen Services "Long Term Care Ombudsman Program " recruits volunteers as resident advocates to visit DuPage County nursing facilities.  Volunteers are assigned to a nursing facility and are required to visit that facility one time per month.  Volunteers make a difference in the lives of those they represent and enjoy knowing they have impacted positively on the quality of life for those residents.  Volunteers receive a one-day training course and supervised training visits to a nursing facility.  If questions or concerns arise, the volunteers have the expertise of DuPage County Ombudsman staff to draw from.  If you’re interested in becoming a trained volunteer Ombudsman, you can contact Senior Services at 630-407-6489.

Volunteers are needed for social interaction with clients who face mental illness either in a group setting or as a 1:1 mentor.  Activities may vary centered around support and conversation.  A variety of volunteer placements are available during weekdays, evenings and on weekends.  Volunteer training is conducted quarterly which covers information about mental illness diagnoses and treatments, and empathic listening.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and be able to make a six-month commitment, serving about 2 hours weekly.  Skills required include reliability, being emotionally stable, flexible and a good listener.

The Volunteers in Probation Program seeks to increase the community’s awareness of the Criminal Justice System by having individuals apply their educational knowledge and practical life experiences to the areas of Adult Probation, Juvenile Probation and Juvenile Detention.  Volunteer positions involve tutoring, mentoring and assisting probation officers.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) are volunteers who are trained to monitor court cases of children brought in to the DuPage County juvenile and family court system because of abuse, neglect and/or dependence.  Once trained, volunteer advocates are assigned to monitor a child's case through its duration, usually 18-36 months.

CASA advocates provide written objective reports with information gathered from interviews.  The reports enable judges to make knowledgeable decisions about each child's placement and treatment needs.  CASA also utilizes volunteers for duties within the office and fundraising for general operating expenses.

Donka, Incorporated, a non-profit organization located and operated in space donated by the DuPage Convalescent Center in Wheaton, provides comprehensive computer training and access to assistive technology for physically disabled and visually impaired adults (18 years or older) who live in DuPage County.  All services are free  to students.  This innovative program is the only one of its kind in the Chicago area, serving as a means of education and vocational training.  

Volunteers keep the computer lab open evenings and weekends and allow graduates of the training program to practice their skills, search on the internet, and send and receive emails.  Volunteers can also serve as instructors or tutors on a one-on-one basis with residents of the DuPage Convalescent Center who are gradates of the program.

JUST stands for Justice, Understanding, Serving and Teaching.  JUST of DuPage provides chaplaincy, educational programs, addiction recovery, increased employability, and social service/counseling in order that individuals incarcerated in DuPage County jail may make positive changes in their lives.  We are in need of volunteers to assist staff with these programs.  Volunteers must pass a criminal background check and be approved by the Sheriff.

Safe Harbor is a children's waiting room which is available at no-charge to families conducting business at the Courthouse and Annex Building.  Children ages 6 months through 12 years can come to Safe Harbor.  We are in need of volunteers to assist staff in caring for the children.  Safe Harbor is open Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  All volunteers are required to pass a background check.
