DuPage County Votes to Prohibit Sale of Recreational Cannabis
The DuPage County Board voted 10-8 on Tuesday to prohibit the sale of recreational cannabis in unincorporated areas.
The Illinois Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, which Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed on June 25, allows the County to pass an ordinance prohibiting the location of cannabis businesses.
The Board determined the operation of cannabis businesses presents adverse impacts on the health, safety, and welfare of residents and additional costs and burdens on law enforcement and the judiciary system.
The Board did vote, however, to assess the maximum permitted 3 percent sales tax on cannabis sales made at businesses located in DuPage County municipalities in order to help offset increased public safety costs.
