ResponsibilitiesThe Board of Review is a quasi-judicial agency established by
State Statute with the intent of providing property owners with an informal
venue where they can resolve assessed value disputes. The Board of Review does
not have the authority to directly change actual property tax bills. The Board
of Review consists of three members who are required by law to have prior real
estate experience and pass a State administered exam demonstrating real estate
appraisal proficiency and an understanding of the Illinois Property Tax Code.
In addition to the three regular board members, the Board of Review utilizes
expanded members who are required to have the same minimum qualifications as
the regular Board of Review members.

Compensation$175 per diem and mileage reimbursement
QualificationsApplicants are required to have 2 years prior real estate experience and pass an examination offered by the Illinois Department of Revenue to determine their aptitude for the office. The Chairman of the County Board may appoint qualified residents of counties that are directly adjacent to that Chairman's county to serve as additional members of the Expanded Board of Review in Lake, DuPage, McHenry or Kane Counties (35 ILCS 200/6-25).
CompositionThe number of Expanded Board of Review members is not limited by State statute or County Ordinance.
