Veterans Assistance Commission

The Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC) of DuPage is a distinct unit of local government created by State Law under the Military Veterans Assistance Act and funded by DuPage County. The VAC also has an Intergovernmental Agreement between the County of DuPage. The VAC is managed by a Board of Directors who are Veterans representing the various Veteran service organizations in DuPage County.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Veterans Assistance Commission of DuPage County, Illinois is to provide emergency financial assistance to indigent veterans and their families. To seek first to understand and to improve the economic well being and quality of life for the veterans of DuPage County, who have served our country honorably, in the Armed Forces of the United States. The VAC also provides non-financial services and seeks to identify and provide for other needs that Veterans and their families may have.

Program

The Veterans Assistance Program is a temporary emergency financial assistance program and should not be considered an on-going financial supportive program over any considerable period.  It is designed to provide needed services to eligible Veterans and their families who are in need of meeting basic living expenses.

It is financial assistance paid exclusively to military veterans with a Honorable or General Under Honorable Conditions Discharge, their spouses, and dependents.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility for assistance to veterans and their families is based upon service in the armed forces of the United States. To receive VAC financial assistance, all applicants shall first verify their eligibility by submitting requested information and documentation:

  • Military Discharge Papers (DD-214) – Honorable or General Under Honorable Conditions
  • DuPage County Resident
  • Federal Poverty Level – Under 300% - (Single Veteran - $3397, Married - $4577)
  • Unexpected Financial Event

Examples of Assistance

A partial listing of available services provided include assistance with the following:

  • Mortgage or rent payments.
  • Utility payments.
  • Emergency medical prescription.
  • VA Medical Transportation needs.
  • Burial expenses.
  • Work or Home related expenses.
  • Food/Family Essentials
  • Auto Expenses

The VAC of DuPage also offers information and referral, location and retrieval of discharge documents, and other services for the Veteran Community.

Board Meetings

The VAC board meets monthly on the third Wednesday at 7 p.m.
